Increasing the slider for any terrain type will increase the percentage of the map that is occupied by that terrain type. If you want to know exactly how much, the percentage is X*100/(P+H+M+R), where X is the number of the slider and P, H, M and R as the numbers for plains, Hills, Mountains and Random, respectively.
