I recently bought a no1 mk3* that looks like it was a factory refinished rifle from 1942 (at least from what i can tell). It shoots wonderfully but have been having trouble with the magazine. The magazine does not seem to seat into the rifle properly.It can be loaded from No1,2,3,or 4 Chargers with Mk 6, 7, 7z ammo, all in .303 British. The Rifle No1 was a "Millie" (spelt MLE), but the No1 MKIII was a SMLE (pronounced Smellie), but the rifle No 4 was not, just to confuse you more. The short magazine was the same length as the long one, but the rifles taking them were shorter & longer.
