Gunpowder for reloading 9mm.

Posted May 15, 2014. I was able to score some Red Dot Powder (YAY ). I am getting ready to load up some 9mm loads and can only find data from the older Alliant load sheets. My Lyman 49th manual does not have any published data for this powder for 9mm. I know it will work, maybe not the best but it should do ok for around 1500 plinking rounds.This spherical powder is a versatile shotshell propellant for heavy field loads, providing true magnum velocities with superb patterns. Just like Precision Rifle and Varget can work for 55 grain bullets, they are not very good for that weight, and best suited for 69 grain and ABOVE in weight. The powders with medium burn rate in the 5.56 range, such as Benchmark, H335, AA2230, AA2460, TAC, Power Pro Varmint, are better "overall" choices for wider range between 50-77 grain.I use Bullseye for 380, 9mm, 357/38, 10mm, and 45 ACP. 2400 for rifle loads of 357, 44, and 45 Colt with jacketed bullets. Trail Boss for plinking lead bullets in 357, 44, and 45 Colt. Titegroup or Unique. I think Titegroup is cleaner burning and like they say on the bottle "A Little goes a long way".

I'm new to reloading and am looking for advice on how to select a powder. I'm loading 9mm 115gr LRN using Hodgdon Titegroup. According to their loading data (Cartridge Loads - Hodgdon Reloading Data Center - data.hodgdon.com), the load should range from 3.9 to 4.3 grs; I'm using the bottom of that range (3.9) figuring it was the safest place to start.Also, if your going for specifically USPSA loads, MOST of us w/9mm prefer a 147gr, traveling >850 fps this is the floor for minor power factor, but alot of us also shoot 125gr going >1000fps. Heavier going slower is more of a pushy feel, and lighter going faster, is more poppy. But, you have to make power factor.Starting at 4.8 grains will cycle most pistols reliably and up to 5.2 grains for a good all round load with 124 gr. 9MM FMJ's. The only load I load higher is Speer's 124 Gold Dot's at 5.4 grains. All my 124 gr. hollowpoints get seated from 1.120"-1.125".
