Loads of 2 bolt small blocks were raced all through the 60s. The dz 302's although rated at something like 290 hp actually ran over 400 hp. I beleive they were 2 bolt in 67 and 68. The ticket is in using the right parts (like a forged crank and rods) and a meticulously ballanced bottom end.
