Generally people say a North wind is not good because it follows a cold front 90% of the time. After the main lake gets iffy the canals should be a week or so longer. Would think without a major rain the ice itself on the lake shouldn't be affected at all really just the snow on top the lake. Just need to avoid river mouths or creeks etc, where the runoff enters the lake.

Ive been fishing metro for years, and the only species of gar ive seen back there are the longnose. The spotted have a shorter snout, and slight differences in coloration.
