Initially, all of our M14's had the vented handguards. About a year or so later, we exchanged these for solid ones because the vented handguards cracked too easily. The heat shimmering problem is understandable, but it wasn't given as the reason for replacement at the time, at least not in the Marine Corps. Save Share.
