Hosting your event at the Nelson-Atkins is a unique way to support our mission and keep admission free to over 500,000 visitors annually. You do not need to be a member of the museum to reserve space, however, members at certain levels do enjoy discounted venue rental rates. When the shrine came to the museum, it was so dirty that the original paint was undetectable. Grime had become stuck to the varnish (glossy finish) covering the painted wood from years of previous use. Conservators at the Nelson-Atkins removed the varnish in order to reveal the paint.
