Jun 18, 2016 · Just based upon your initial post you've stated you have a 350 that runs perfectly fine. There's a 400 out there that you may not know a lot about until you bust it down. A 383 option has been thrown out there and you say you are on a TIGHT budget. That being said, I'd stick with the 350. Build the 400. You can put you 350 crank in a 400 if you use bearing. spacers 2.45" vs the 400's 2.65" main bearings. As long as you use the 400's heads or have a. new set drilled for the steam holes you should. not have any cooling problems. The "normal" way to build a 383 is a 3.75" stroke. crank from a 400 turned down to 2.45" mains.So im building a 406 sbc. and need a cam, but i need some help pick one. With a 5.3 it is a junkyard longblock. You may lose a turbo or two. But your talking $2500 to 3000 the second time around vs the 383 or 400 costing you $6000 to 6500.

If you want that level of power the easiest way to get it is via any decent aluminum head, Edelbrock E-Tec, Brodix, AFR, Trick Flow, in the 200cc range plus a Hyd roller in the 230 duration range .525 lift, 8.5:1 compression WITH a F1 supercharger. I wouldn't say your bottom end is the most important; almost always heads are the limiting factor on an engine. to reach 500hp on a 383 you will have to spend a good chunk of your $4500 budget on heads and the machine work necessary to get those same heads up to snuff.
