To get to Central though you need a Gas mask. To get the Gas Mask you need to travel southern side of Sunburn Desert and follow road to archaeological dig site. You should get a quest at some point that leads you all the way to the other end of Serpent's Crossing to a Ruined Temple where you can get the Gas Mask bit after you kill the boss there.
