Certain baubles in RLCraft (dragon eye, ring of enchanted eyes) give night vision. Many shaders make night vision useless or ineffective. I don't know about any shaders that are compatible with night vision, but I know a few that aren't : KUDA (visual glitch), SEUS (very little change, almost unnoticeable), Chocapic (very little or no change).
I have crashing issues in RLCraft with shaders, more specifically with all of these: Sildurs Vibrant shaders, Seus Renewed, KUDA Shaders. BSL Shaders and ChocaPics Shaders. Otherwise, if forge is present, then you will always add it into the mods folder. Just to answer the second part of my question in case someone runs into this in the future: You check for Optifine by going into the settings and seeing if optifine's settings are prevent (under video settings, if there's a shaders button then you've got optifine).
